Chemical Compounds in Cells

Warm-up:
Discuss whether you think this statement is true or false.  Explain your reasons.
You are what you eat.

We are watching Bill Nye the Science Guy on Nutrients and taking notes on p.91 in our IA Notebooks.

Observing Plant Cells

Due Today: Completed Notes

Read the lab sheet,  Observing Plant and Animal Cells. Add it to your table of contents and attach it to p.89 in your IAN
otebook.

Today, you will complete the final portion of this lab by observing onion cells, red and white onion.

Stain the white.  We will make a list of observable characteristics to compare and contrast these skin cells with our skin cells.

red onion

Due Today: Looking Inside Cells/Can You Identify These  Cell Structures?

Lab:

Make a wet-mount slide of red onion skin.  Draw and label the cells on low, medium, and high power magnification on p.88. Label a cell, cell walls, cell membrane, nucleus, and cytoplasm.

Cell Video

Why did it take over 200 years after the microscope was invented to develop the cell theory?

Let's discuss the observations by scientists that contributed to this theory and summarize our findings on p.77.
Get ready to take notes on a classic video, "Bill Nye the Science Guy- Cells!"

Introduction to the Cell Theory

Hello!
I. We are watching a video and taking notes on p.77. You are trying to answer our critical question:
How did the invention of the microscope lead to the development of the Cell Theory?

  1. What is a theory?
  2. What does the Cell Theory state?
  3. What evidence supports this theory?

Be sure to include the scientists' names and describe their contributions.

II. Please add your November calendar to your IA Notebook p.78 after you write your homework assignment down.

III. Make a new section title page on p.79 which includes:

  • the title in tall (2") letters, CELLS
  • 3 colors
  • 2 related pictures
