Partner Quiz: Alive or Not?
Today you will discuss the list of things with a partner and decide if they are living (which includes once-living) and non-living things. You must describe your reasons for deciding if something is considered alive.
After you put your name on your paper, please underline it. You will also write your partner's name on the paper. If you disagree with your partner and you cannot convince each other, then circle the problem and I will grade you separately for that one.
Remember this quiz is TWO-SIDED and to complete both sides of the sheet. The third part is an assignment in Google Classroom. Please close your screen until you finish the paper portion.
After you turn in your paper quiz to the brown tray, please pick up your homework assignment, Tool of the Scientist. This will be the study guide for the microscope safety quiz this Wednesday!

Habitat Survey of Coastal Dune Scrub
Yesterday, we were out in the field with Botanist John Chesnut. You made qualitative and quantitative observations of the Coastal Dune Scrub plant community. Please read your two paragraph summary describing the living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) factors that characterize this rare plant community to your table partner.
Describe the connection between the different factors in this environment that make it a habitat for a kangaroo rat, quail, a lizard, snail, or some sort of insect.

Characteristics of Living Things!
We are starting a new section in the notebook. Please make a new title page on p59. Include :
Make the the back of that page a new Table of Contents and the Homework, Note taking Guide on The Study of Life Science is p.61.
Today, set up for Cornell Notes on the Characteristics of Living Things.
- the title in large letters, What is Life Science?
- 2 pictures
- 3 colors.

Paper Airplane Project: Designing a Controlled Experiment
Due today: Did you write a good scientific question to test your prototype paper airplane, a research summary, and list your sources in a bibliography?
Today:
Title IAN p.51 with your question.
Write your hypothesis (use correct format).
Identify your independent variable that you will change to optimize your chances for success.
Identify the dependent variable and the control (the plane with no variable) in your experiment.
Write step by step directions for how to make your plane, the modifications, and how to fly the plane. Explain how to collect the data, what to measure, how to measure, and what to record in the data table. Be sure that you tell the reader how many times to repeat each trial.
On IAN p.52 you'll need to record observations of the flight. Explain what's working and what's not working.
On IAN p.53, Diagram (draw and label) the modifications you make and make an organized data table.
Set up your graph on IAN p.54
